San Diego Bible Church (SDBC) Spiritual Growth Track for a Disciple of Jesus Christ
At SDBC, we are dedicated to "The Great Commandment" and "The Great Commission." Simply, this is to love God by loving others and by personal discipleship. The following are key steps to growing spiritually as a disciple of Jesus Christ.
1. Personal relationship with Jesus Christ: Getting saved by faith alone in Christ alone.
2. Baptism and Child Dedication: Baptism is the first step of obedience to Jesus as an outward action of an inward commitment to Christ. Child dedication is a parent's public commitment to raise children to know, love and serve Jesus.
3. Spiritual Disciplines: Developing a commitment of praying, studying and reading the Bible on a regular basis.
4. Mentoring & Accountability: Making a commitment to one-on-one discipleship with at least one other person in a transparent accountability relationship.
5. Boot Camp: Learning the essentials of Christianity, the facts behind our faith and why we believe what we do.
6. Growth Groups: An opportunity to make new friends, learn and practice the love of Christ towards others.
7. XBI - Xtreme Biblical Interpretation: Learning to interpret Scripture for yourself through Hermeneutics, the art and science of Biblical interpretation.
8. Leadership Development: Our commitment to raising and equipping leaders who will train and develop other leaders through serving, Pastors in Training, the men’s ministry, women’s ministry and more.

XBI: Xtreme Biblical Interpretation
Hermeneutics is the art and science of Biblical interpretation. It is used in all the best seminaries to train pastors how to properly interpret the Bible. This simple 5-step process is easy to master and is the heart of XBI. Once learned, XBI will equip you to study God’s Word properly for life.
Most misunderstanding of Scripture is a result of faulty hermeneutics or reading God’s Word with an agenda. What is an agenda? It is any past experience or exposure you have had about the meaning of any verse or passage of Scripture. We all have a tendency to read someone else’s opinion into the text and it is imperative we recognize this challenge. We also have a pre-disposition to read meaning into the text that was never meant by the author who wrote under the inspiration of the Holy Spirit.
Our job as Bible students is to learn to get to the original author’s meaning, NOT make the text mean something God never intended. Keep in mind, some commentaries of the Bible are accurate and some are not!
XBI is a seminary level 12-week course on how to interpret the Bible using hermeneutics. This course will not only teach you to interpret the bible in CONTEXT, but will cover many exciting topics and issues of today for the serious Bible student. During the Q&A session, we will attempt to handle any Biblical challenges or passages you may be struggling with personally.
Here is some of what you can expect: controversial excitement, self discovery, new skills in accurately handling the Word of God for yourself, examination of the Old and New Testament books, learning how to solve difficult biblical passages, techniques of interpretation, inductive Bible study methods and basic hermeneutics. We will explore AND practice Biblical interpretation within multiple small groups taught all led by Pastor Steve Brown. We will also be making new friends as we share our discoveries together.
What to bring to class:
1) A Bible you can write in. (Highly recommend NASB, wide margin is helpful but not necessary)
2) A notebook and pen. (colored highlighters may be helpful)
3) A concordance that matches your Bible version (You can access free software for your computer if you desire at net.bible.org) This will make it possible for you to do high speed searches in all languages.
